DO WE TURN HERE OR NOT?

Scene:Goro drives into Kyoto with Hiroko, Mike and Akiko.

比呂子 　 おつかれさま、五郎さん、もうすぐ前方に東寺の五重の塔の先が見えてきて、それで　京都の町中に入ってきたことになるんだけど・・・。

Hiroko Well done, Goro. We'll soon be able to see the top of the five-storied pagoda of To-ji ahead and then we'll really be in Kyoto.

五郎 いよいよ京都か。京都東インターで名神を出そこなった時は、どうなることかと心配 したよ。

Goro

 Kyoto at last. When we missed the turning at Kyoto Higashi Interchange on the Meishin Expressway, I did get a bit worried.

比呂子 わたしも。でも、京都南インターチェンジで出たもんだから、おかげさまで 京都観光をしながら、おばのうちへ、たどりつけそうよ。・・・間もなく東寺が見えてくるから、その東寺の手前を右に曲がって・・・、そして二つ目の信号を左折。

Hiroko

 Me too. But because we got off at the Kyoto Minami Interchange, it looks as though we'll be able to do a Kyoto sightseeing tour on the way to my aunt's. We'll soon be able to see To-ji... turn right just before the temple, then turn left at the second set of traffic lights.

五郎 あ、見えてきた。あれかな？　東寺の五重の塔は。

Goro

 Oh, I can see it. Is that it - the pagoda of To-ji?

比呂子 そう、そう。あの手前の道、九条通りを右にお曲がりください。

Hiroko

 Yes, please turn right into Kujo Dori, the road just before it.

五郎 はい、かしこまりました。

Goro Right. Anything you say.
比呂子 それから、二つ目の信号を左。そうするとそれが堀川通りだから、それをまっすぐ五条通りまで突っ走って、五条通りを右折・・・、それから・・・

 Hiroko Then turn left at the second set of lights. That will be Horikawa Dori, go straight along there until Gojo Dori. At Gojo Dori turn right, then...

五郎 そんなに一度に言われても困るよ。京都を運転するの初めてなんだから。

Goro I can't cope if you tell me all at once. It's the first time I've driven in Kyoto.

比呂子 ごめんなさい。とにかくこの堀川通りを突っ走って・・・。

Hiroko Sorry. At any rate, shoot down Horikawa Dori....

五郎 突っ走りたくてもこんなに混んできたから、突っ走れやしないよ。夕方のラッシュアワーにかかってしまったから。

Goro In this traffic I couldn't shoot down even if I wanted to. We've hit the evening rush hour.

比呂子 本当に混んできたわね。まあ、無事に平安の都にたどりついたんだからのんびり運転で、観光気分を味わいましょう。

Hiroko It really is busy. We've reached the Heian Capital safely, so let's take it easy and enjoy being tourists.

五郎 うん。京都は修学旅行で一度来たきりだし、あの時はかっぱエビせんを食べながら、観光バスにゆられていたことしか覚えていないんだから。

Goro Yes. I've only been to Kyoto once on the school excursion and all I remember of that is eating prawn crackers on the sightseeing coach.

比呂子 今、横切っている通りが七条通りでーす。次の大きい交差点が五条で、そこを右に曲がってくださーい。・・・さあ、早めに右折レーンに入らないと。

Hiroko The road crossing over here is Shichijo Dori. The next big crossroads is Gojo - turn right there, please. You have to get into the right-hand lane early...

五郎 これだね。ここを右に曲がってと。やれやれ、右折は一苦労だね。

Goro This is it, isn't it? Turn right here. Thank goodness. Turning right is always tough.

比呂子 それから、この地図によると、一つ、二つ、三つ目の大きい交差点が五条河原町です。

Hiroko Then, going by this map, the first ... second ... third large crossroads is Gojo Kawaramachi.

五郎 その交差点を右？　左？

Goro

 Do we turn right or left there?

比呂子 そこをまっすぐ。

Hiroko

 Go straight on.

五郎 はい、はい。ここをこのまま、まっすぐ行ってと。

Goro

 Right. Carrying straight on here.

比呂子 そして五条大橋を渡って・・・この鴨川沿いの一帯は、昔、オバケの出そうなススキが原だったんですって。

Hiroko

 Then cross Gojo Ohashi. Long ago, the whole area along the Kamo River used to be a spooky ghost field covered with pampas grass.

五郎 オバケより、もう少し歴史的な話にしてくれよ。いにしえの都なんだから。

Goro

 Talk about something more historical than ghosts. It is an ancient capital, after all.
