マイク 五郎さん、最近、運転免許を取って車を買ったそうですね。

Mike Goro, I heard that you passed your driving test recently, and bought a car.

五郎 ええ、買いました。

Goro

 Yes, I did.

マイク 何を買ったんですか。

Mike

 What did you get?

五郎 この近くの中古車センターへ行って、いろいろ物色したんですが、結局ホンダのシビックにしました。

Goro

 I went to the used car centre nearby, looked round and in the end decided on a Honda Civic.

マイク 調子はどうですか。

Mike

 What condition is it in?

五郎 最高です。でも、いろいろ高くつきました。車は少し値切って８６万円でしたが、 その他に税金や保険やらで・・・・全部で１００万円を越えました。

Goro First class. The car itself was 860,000 yen after discount, but with tax, insurance etc., it came to more than one million yen altogether, so it was more than I expected.
マイク そうですか。私も一台欲しいのですが、なかなか手が届きません。イギリスでは、兄から譲り受けた真っ赤なMGのロードスター、１９６７年型に乗っていましたが、日本に来る前に、手放してしまいました。

Mike Really. I'd like a car too, but I can't really afford one. In England, I drove a 1967 red MG Roadster, which I took over from my elder brother, but I got rid of it before I came to Japan.

五郎 ええっ？　もったいないですね。MGのコンバーチブルは、カー･マガジンで写真を見たことがあります。クロムのバンバーとタイヤのスポークが独特のボディー・ラインに、マッチして、まぶしいような車でしたよ。

Goro What? That was a mistake. I've seen a photo of an MG convertible in a car magazine. It's a stunning car with its chrome bumpers and wire wheels matching the special body-line.

マイク 五郎さんは、車に詳しいんですね。

Mike You seem to know a lot about cars.

五郎 ええ。僕はこう見えても、ヨーロッパのハイ・パフォーマンス・カーの専門家なんです。雑誌から得た知識ばかりだけど。

Goro Well, it might not look like it, but I'm well up on European high performance cars. But it all comes from magazines

マイク それじゃ、いつかヨーロッパに行って本物に出会う事ですね。

Mike Well then, you'll have to go to Europe to see the real thing some day.

五郎 そうですね。そうしたいですね・・・マイクさんの日本滞在はいつまでですか。

Goro Yes. I'd love to. .... How much longer will you be staying in Japan, Mike?

マイク 今年の１２月中ごろまでです。１２月末でビザが切れますから。

Mike Till mid-December. My visa expires at the end of December.

五郎 そうですか。日本はどうですか。住みやすいですか。

Goro I see. How do you like Japan? Do you feel at home here?

マイク はい、気に入っています。が、１２月でちょうど３年になりますから、そろそろ国に帰って今後の方針を決めなければなりません。今後の方針としては、今、書いている論文を１１月中に書きあげて、１２月に３週間かけて四国、九州などをまわるつもりです。

Mike Yes, I like it, but I have to return home sometime soon and make plans for the future. I'll have been here for three years in December. My plan for the rest of my stay is to finish my thesis by the end of November. Then I'd like to tour around Shikoku and Kyushu for three weeks in December.
