MY NAME IS HIROKO TANAKA

比呂子 はじめまして、田中比呂子と申します。どうぞよろしく。

Hiroko How do you do. My name is Hiroko Tanaka. Pleased to meet you.
佐々木 こちらこそ。営業課長の佐々木です。さあ、どうぞ。おかけください。田中さんは　山本君の紹介でしたね。

Sasaki

 And you. I'm Sasaki, Operations Manager. Please take a seat. You know Yamamoto, don't you?

比呂子

はい、中学、高校と、ずっと同じ学校でした。私は女子大にまいりましたので、大学時代は、ほとんど、会う機会がございませんでした。あのう、これは履歴書でございます。どうぞ。

Hiroko

That's right. We went to the same junior and senior high schools. But then I went to a women's college, and we didn't meet very often during university....May I give you my C.V.?
佐々木 はい、拝見します。あ、そうそう、山本君から聞きましたが、高校時代に アメリカに行っておられたそうですね。それでは英語は得意中の得意でしょうね。

Sasaki

 Thank you. Ah yes, I heard from Yamamoto - you went to the States during your senior high school days. That must mean that you're particularly good at English.
比呂子

はい、どうにか、アメリカでの生活には事欠かない程度に上達しました。

Hiroko Well... I made enough progress to get by without too much difficulty in the States.
佐々木 そうですか。ええと、この履歴書によると、昭和５８年の秋から一年間 カリフォルニアの高校に、AFSの留学生として行っておられたわけですね。

 Sasaki I see. So then, I see that from the autumn of 1983, you spent a year at a Californian high school as an AFS exchange student.
比呂子 はい。ストロベリーフィールズ・ハイスクールという公立の高校に行っておりました。

 Hiroko Yes, I was at a public high school called Strawberry Fields High School.

佐々木 イギリスのストロベリーフィールズなら、ビートルズの歌で聞いたことがありますが、これはカリフォルニアですか。

 Sasaki I've heard of the Strawberry Fields in England from the Beatles' song, but this was in California?

比呂子 はい。サンフランシスコから北に６０マイル、えーと、約１００キロ位の所にある小さないなか町でございます。今年の春、五年ぶりに、通訳として日本ペンクラブの有名な作家のお伴をする機会がございまして、ついでに、ストロベリーフィールズにも寄ってまいりました。懐かしいホームステイの家族や、先生方にも会ってまいりました。

Hiroko That's right. It's a small country town 60 miles - that's ..er... around 100 kilometres north of San Francisco. This spring I had the opportunity to accompany a famous writer from the Japan Pen Club to the States as an interpreter and managed to drop in at Strawberry Fields for the first time in five years. I visited my old homestay family and teachers.
佐々木 若い時に、思い出の種をまいておくのは、いいことですね。で、えー、東京女子大で、英米文学を専攻されて、今年の３月に卒業・・・と、あ、すると、うちのワイフの後輩ですね。 もっとも、卒業年度は田中さんは平成元年になっていますから、歳はちょうど一回り違うようですが・・・。それで、大学では何かクラブに入っておられましたか。

 Sasaki It's good to make the most of your opportunities when you are young. Now, I see you majored in English and American literature at Tokyo Women's Christian University and graduated last March. So, you studied in the same university as my wife. In fact, if you ' graduated in 1989, you must be exactly 12 years younger than her. Did you belong to any clubs at university?
比呂子 はい。その時は小説家希望でしたから、文芸部に入って、へたな推理小説ばかり書いておりました。

 Hiroko At that time I wanted to be a writer, so I joined the Literature Club and spent my time writing bad crime novels.
佐々木 スポーツは何かなさっていますか。

 Sasaki Do you do any sports?
比呂子 はい。冬はスキー、夏は登山によくまいります。

 Hiroko Yes, I often ski in the winter and in the summer I go mountain climbing.
