比呂子 　
 こんにちは、待った？

Hiroko Hi. Have you been waiting long?

五郎 いや、今、来たばかり、元気そうだね。

Goro

 No, I've just got here. You look well.

比呂子 ええ、五郎さんも元気そうね。今日は、五郎さんのたのみが引きうけられるといいんだけど・・・

Hiroko

Thanks. You look well too, Goro. It'll be good if it works out about the job.

五郎 あ、チョコレート・パフェ、一つ。それから、ホットもういっぱい。じゃ、早速本筋にはいろう。まずは会社の説明からするよ。会社は１９８６年に 今の鈴木社長が設立し、英会話独習用の学習器具ポケットコーダーの販売をしております。

Goro

 Ah... One chocolate parfait, please. And another cup of coffee. Right, let's get down to business. First I'll tell you something about the company. It was set up in 1986 by the current President, Mr. Suzuki. We sell study equipment called PocketCorders for private study of English conversation.

比呂子 その、ポケットコーダーって？

Hiroko What are these PocketCorders?

五郎 ポケットコーダーっていうのは、社長の考え出した商品名で、要するにポケットの中に入る超薄型ミニサイズのカセットテープレコーダーなんだ。英会話のテープとのセットにして、町の本屋やデパートでも売り出されているんだ。

Goro PocketCorder is a product name thought up by Mr. Suzuki. Basically, they are ultra thin miniature cassette recorders that fit into a pocket. They come as a set with English conversation tapes and are on sale in book shops and department stores all over.

比呂子 ふーん。英会話独習用の超薄型ミニサイズのＬＬ器具をポケットに忍ばせて 満員の通勤電車の中でも、こっそり、勉強できるというわけね。

Hiroko I see. So you can hide this ultra-thin miniature English conversation language lab in your pocket and study surreptitiously even on crowded commuter trains!

五郎 そうそう。それでね、僕の仕事は、その販売網を広げることなんだ。

Goro That's it. And my job is to broaden the sales network.

比呂子 じゃ、わたしの仕事というのは？

Hiroko So what would my job be?

五郎 比呂子さんには、ポケットコーダーを買ったお客さんへのアフターサービスをお願いしたいんだ。

Goro

 We'd like you to take care of the after-sales service for clients who have purchased PocketCorders.

比呂子 アフターサービスって、どんなことをするの？
 Hiroko

What does the after-sales service involve?

五郎 毎週一回、決まった時間に電話して、英語で話しかける電話レッスンのイングリッシュ・ティーチャー。

Goro

 Ringing up the clients at a prearranged time each week and speaking to them in English as a telephone English teacher.

比呂子 おもしろそうね。やってみようかしら。 先生は何人ぐらいいるの？

Hiroko Sounds interesting. Perhaps I'll have a go. How many teachers are there?

五郎 イギリス人が一人だけ。グリーンさんって言うんだけど、彼は早稲田大学の留学生。大学院で日本文学を研究中で、２、３ヵ月前から、アルバイトで 週３日、確か、月曜日の午前中と、水、木の午後だけ、来ているようだね。

Goro There's just one man, Mr. Green from the U.K., who's studying at Waseda University. He's doing postgraduate studies in Japanese literature and has been coming part-time three days a week, for the past two or three months. In fact, I think he only comes on Monday mornings and on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

比呂子 わたしの仕事は毎日？

Hiroko I would work every day?

五郎 そう。給料やその他詳しい事は直接、面接の時、課長から説明があると思うよ。いつ、面接に行ける？

Goro Right. I expect the operations manager will go into the details of salary and so on at the interview. When can you come for interview?

比呂子 あしたは先約があるから、あさっての午後がいいわ。

Hiroko I've already got something on tomorrow. The afternoon of the day after would suit me.
五郎 サンキュウ。じゃ、今日、課長の都合のいい時間を聞いてから、すぐ電話するよ。

Goro Thanks. So, as soon as I've checked when the boss is free, I'll call you.
